Who I Am

I'm an artist and my my medium is sterling silver and recycled beads. Home is currently on the West Coast of Canada and I try to live an eco-friendly and organic lifestyle, which I incorporate into my business and all that I do. I find inspiration everywhere! Nature, food, people, art, characters, fashion and style all influence my designs.

{Jessica Reiss, ecocessories designer}

I love creating jewelry that has a story and a low environmental impact and I try to pour my heart and energy into each piece I make. When naming my pieces I think of what in this world the colours/shapes/textures of the recycled beads remind me of and bring that image to focus in my mind. This image inspires how the design is assembled, and how it feels and wears.

What I Believe

That it is possible to produce high quality, eco-friendly, and ethically sound jewelry designs that are 100% handmade wearable works of art. ecocessories jewelry is:

High Quality - hand-wrapped loops close every joint, and I never use jump rings which can split or stretch.

Eco-Friendly - I use only recycled beads sourced from my Jewelry Recycling Service and non-toxic cleaning and silversmithing processes in my North Vancouver, B.C. studio.

{Antique Garden Love Necklace - find this design at the TWO OF HEARTS boutique}

Ethical - I support small, local businesses for my silver, tools, office supplies, graphic design, web development etc. I also incorporate fair trade materials into my designs when possible.

Handmade - All aspects of my designs are handmade - I hand form every silver component, hoop, etc. All my earring wires are handmade, and my signature, hand crafted clasps become part of the design.

One-Of-A-Kind - Every jewelry design is unique - never see another person wearing the same piece of jewelry as you!

What I Do

I design sterling silver and recycled bead jewelry for my retail locations, markets, and my online shop.

{Soldering some hand formed circles in my North Vancouver studio}

I also operate a jewelry recycling service and invite anyone (including you!) to recycle old, broken, or simply unwanted jewelry with ecocessories. I disassemble the jewelry and use the beads and vintage components for my new designs. YES I want anything! It is a jewelry recycling service only meant to relieve you of unwanted jewelry that is cluttering your life. I have colour coded and sorted drawers at my studio and use your recycled jewelry as inspiration for my new designs.

{Lining up some recycled beads for a bracelet design}

I love to connect with like-minded individuals about living green, eco-fashion, unique design, or fresh ideas. I am proud to say that I have almost 750 online supporters between my Twitter, Facebook, and E-Newsletter Subscribers and I would love for you to be 751!

{Black Tusk Puzzle Bracelet can be found at FINE FINDS boutique}

To say THANKS to my online supporters, I'm offering a FREE pair of earrings to anyone who comments on this blog post by Wednesday, September 30th. What do you think of my designs? my mission to recycle jewelry? living green? sustainable fashion? Comment below - you will be contacted by the e-mail address you provide, which will be kept strictly confidential.

Sustainably Yours,

Jessica Reiss

Glass Cabinet Creations

It's been an inspiring and exciting weekend at the ecocessories studio. I invested in a glass cabinet to display all my finished creations, and have never felt more inspired. It's much more rewarding having my designs displayed to urge on more designing instead of keeping each piece packaged away until it reaches it's new home.

The website will be a bit quiet this week I'm afraid, but there are some awesome designs to be had in the online store and amazing deals in the sale section. My newest designs are not going to be posted yet as I have an appointment with another Vancouver store this week who is interested in carrying my line, and they'll get the pick of the crop!

I did want to share with you these playful wire wrapped rings I've been making. These rings are so fun and are for sale at the Two Of Hearts boutique on Main St.

Let me know what you think of the latest designs in the comments below!

Modish Handmade Blog

If I have few minutes of down time, I always find it inspirational to peruse the online world to see what other artists, designers, and crafters are doing. I love how inspiring it is to see two artists, who work in the same medium, produce radically different and equally beautiful results.

One of my favourite places to head for this sort of inspiration is the Modish Handmade Blog. The blog is written by the fabulous Jena, whose mission is to bring awareness to emerging art and design talent. Artists, including myself, are so thankful for voices like Jena's as her daily efforts are what help us succeed.

If you have time yourself to be inspired, head over to the Modish Blog to oogle the finest the handmade world has to offer, complements of Jena's artistically refreshing taste. Thanks Jena!

Interview Inspiration: Chelsea Bell

Over the next while, I'm going to do a series of short interviews with some beautiful individuals who have been instrumental in my success with ecocessories. Read. Share. Enjoy.

--
Chelsea Bell and I found kindred spirits in each other after becoming neighbors in an inspiring blue house with a white fence in beautiful North Vancouver, B.C. As an early supporter of my jewelry designs, Chelsea has constantly encouraged me to pursue my passions, develop my entrepreneurial ideas, and follow my dreams. Chelsea co-developed the ecocessories website with her talented fiance, Justin, and has often acted as a business confidant to help me explore my ecocessories goals.

I admire her artistic endeavors, most recently with her newly launched Peripheral Kid website which explores Chelsea's insightful take on the arts and culture community. I'm also a strong advocate of the family run business - SleepySheep.ca and trust their sustainable wool products for a safe, eco-friendly sleep night after night.
--

1. What do you do for a living?

I run SleepySheep.ca, an online bedding company, and help other entrepreneurs with their blogs and business processes. I have recently started an arts and culture blog called PeripheralKid.com in order to share my inspiration, and the work of those who inspire me.

{"The Peripheral Kid is an experiment in self exploration both through creation and appreciation of the arts."}

2. What is the best thing about it?

I have the opportunity to use my creativity and design skills to help others achieve their goals, and with SleepySheep, I enjoy helping people to understand the importance of a natural and healthy sleep environment.

3. The worst?

Work for others often eats up time that I would like to invest in my personal creative projects!

4. What inspires you?

I am inspired by the art, design, and creativity of others. Sometimes I find that reading a poem can inspire me visually, while looking at a painting can in turn inspire me to write a poem, a short story, or an essay.

5. What is your art?

My primary art is poetry; I also paint, sketch, craft, and write fiction and essays.

{"Wool creates air pockets that keep the temperature of the sheep consistent, no matter what the weather is doing. It also wicks away moisture and evaporates it out into the environment, while discouraging the growth of fungus, molds, and the allergy sufferer's nightmare: the common dust mite."}

6. How do you incorporate sustainability into your life?

I choose to support local artisans, eat organic and local, and make purchase decisions often based on where the products were made.

7. Your work?

With SleepySheep, we choose post consumer recycled materials for any printed materials, and also choose to support sustainable farming practices with the materials that we purchase.

8. Your fashion?

I am a thrift store junky; I always start my clothes shopping at the thrift stores, where I have found beautiful, unique, and handmade pieces to my wardrobe. I also by from local designers when I can afford to. Sometimes I use my old clothing to make new clothes for myself or my daughter.

9. Why does living sustainably matter to you?

Living as sustainably as we can is the only responsible choice as a mother and as a citizen of the Earth. Each decision that we make has consequences throughout our lives, that reach beyond us in ways that we cannot imagine. We must think of each other, and the well-being of eco-system, in order to find balanced an harmony.

10. What is your favourite quote?

"Let us tenderly and kindly cherish, therefore, the means of knowledge. Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write." - John Adams

11. What wisdom would you like to pass on to others?

Love is an action. If someone says they love you, those are words; this is not love. Love is a series of choices. Love can been seen in your choices. Choose love.

ecocessories customers get 15% off at SleepySheep.ca! Your coupon code will be included with your order confirmation. Thanks Chelsea!
