Wish For an Eco Wire Wrapping Workshop This Year

If you have ever been curious about how ecocessories jewelry is designed, now is your chance to participate in a group workshop where participants will have the chance to design a sterling silver & recycled bead piece of jewelry! Or, if you have an artsy individual on your gift list, purchase that individual a seat in ecocessories' Artistic Wire-Wrapped Jewelry Workshop Series.

Through Vanterra Community Education, I will be teaching monthly workshops starting on Feb. 2, 2010 and Mar. 2, 2010 to beginner jewelry design students. No experience is required for this workshop. Using pliers, hammers, and sterling silver wire you will learn quick and easy techniques to assemble wire wrapped jewelry. Each workshop will provide you the tools and materials to leave the night with at least one complete piece of jewelry handmade by you. Recycled beads from my personal collection will be available for use, as well you are encouraged to bring your own beads, or old jewelry to disassemble and recycle into a new, high quality design.

Sign up online today by visiting Vanterra Community Education here, or purchase a seat as a gift and print the workshop information to tuck in a card for Christmas morning!

You may remember a couple weeks ago we conducted an earrings photo shoot at Portobello West - you may have even been one of the models! On Sunday, Dec. 5th we repeated the photo shoot at Fine Finds - a retailer of ecocessories jewelry in Yaletown, Vancouver, B.C.

Yaletown is a trendy area with some of the finest fashionistas around, and we invited those who were shopping at Fine Finds to model a pair of my ecocessories earrings:

Gift Of Design: A Night of Fashion, Cocktails, and Chocolate

On Thursday, December 17, 2009 ecocessories will be showing support for some local fashion students from Kwantlen Polytechnic University and the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau. The students have planned an amazing event called the Gift Of Design (and tickets might still be available!) hosted at the gorgeous Vancouver Club.

The fashion show will consist of one-of-a-kind garments by young and upcoming designers Caitlin Butcher, Emily Spence, Laura Tanner, Marriki Schlifer, Tessa Hewlett, Monika Buttjes. The fashion show will be taking place in the prestigious club’s beautiful Georgian Room and music will be provided by Vancouver’s own DJ Ashley Marie.

Established in 1930, the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau acts as a central year round toy warehouse collaborating with ten other local Christmas Bureaus for those in need.

Friday, December 11, 2009 Promotes a Green Christmas

I'm always excited to come across a new site that represents the wonderful world of eco-fashion. Lately, has been my go to source for what is happening in the green fashion world. Christmas is right around the corner (only 11 shopping days left at!) and I loved watching this video that encourages us all to think more eco-friendly this holiday season:

Anna Getty is the author of "I'm Dreaming Of A Green Christmas" and points out that even us greenies lower our standard a bit around the holidays! But with the average American's production of trash up 30% on average during this season, there is room for us all to make a few simple changes.

What are you doing to have a greener Christmas? Comment below!

Eco Earrings Photo Shoot at Portobello West

On Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009 my eco-assistant and I invited women at the Portobello West Fashion & Art Market to model a pair of ecocessories earrings! Those who participated got to choose any pair they liked from the collection, and we captured a close up shot of just the ear (no faces for those shy ladies!). The photos were compiled into a video for my website. Watch the video below to find your ear, or to find your style:

A little background info:

The photo shoot was simply a way to interact with women at the market and create a fun atmosphere in the ecocessories booth! Most women were all for participating once they heard it was a shot of just the ear.

It was great for me as a designer because I gained feedback on my designs, and I got to see which styles suit which ladies! I also loved how happy the women were from modeling the earrings. Literally any woman can model for this campaign (assuming her ears are pierced) and it really helped bring out all sorts of beauty in my models.

We repeated the earrings photo shoot yesterday at Fine Finds in Yaletown and will be at Two Of Hearts boutique on Main St. next Saturday! Ladies who modeled at Fine Finds can see their photos being published on Mon. Dec. 14th. Anyone who wants to model is invited to come on down to Two Of Hearts on Sat. Dec. 13th between 12pm and 3pm. See you then!

Granville Online Covers Vancouver Fashion Week

I was reading one my favourite blogs - Citizen Style at Granville Online (they featured ecocessories back in February) and I came across a great video with coverage of all the eco-fashion that was happening at Vancouver Fashion Week.

I recently attended An Evening of Sustainable Wine, Food & Fashion Design for the David Suzuki Foundation and got a chance to see many of the same designs being modeled on the runway. Next year I will have to see about getting ecocessories jewelry featured with the clothes!

New designs are being posted frequently in the ecocessories online shop. Have you visited lately?

Green Consumer Research Survey

This week I was invited to participate in a survey about my decisions as an eco-minded consumer, and was entered to win a sweet $100 gift basket full of eco-goodies! The research is being conducted by the University of Conneticut.

The research will help provide an insight into the green market that will ultimately help green oriented consumers locate eco-friendly businesses and products. Participation will help the researchers understand the needs of green consumers and what businesses can do to help those needs.

I thought you might like to participate too, as any research about this demographic as a whole can help us all succeed at living on a more sustainable planet. Plus, you'll be entered to win too! Click here to complete this 5-10 minute survey.

Adria Vasil: Ecoholic

I was reading the latest e-newsletter from Green Living, a fantastic Canadian print and online publication that is jam packed with articles about the sustainable movement in Canada.

An interview with Adria Vasil caught my attention. Adria recently wrote a book called Ecoholic which contains the "greenest, cleanest and most energy-efficient information under one (Canadian) roof!". Green Living interviewed Adria and I love what this eco heroine has to say.

A few of my favourite snippets from the interview are,

On going green and saving money: "Green stories aren’t on page one [of most newspapers] as much as they were before the recession hit, but people inherently started going back to some of the green home strategies that our grandparents used in the Great Depression to save money. Without necessarily thinking about it, we’re starting to turn the lights out more, consuming less and ultimately realizing that this is exactly what they meant when they said going green could save you money."

On starting with small green steps at home: "Your home is ground zero, so I think once you make the changes in your home, then you can branch out to working on changing the world around you. You get inspired. You get on a roll."

On going beyond the products/services we buy: "We can’t buy our way out of this mess. It can’t start and end with shopping. It can start there but it can’t end there."

Read the whole interview with Adria here, and pick up a copy of Ecoholic for someone on your Christmas list this year!

Recycle Brooches and Buttons as Gift Toppers

I was checking out one of my favourite sites to visit for inspiring ideas, Craft, and I was immediately drawn into this project that uses none other than recycled jewelry! I guess you could use any button or brooch but it would be fun, personal, and eco-friendly to adorn a gift you give this year with a sparkling recycled brooch from Grandma's retired jewels or that statement of bling you chose to ring in the new millennium.

Check out the details here:

David Suzuki Fundraiser Silent Auction Donation

On Thursday, November 19th "An Evening of Sustainable Food, Wine, and Fashion Design" will be happening at the Terminal City Club in Vancouver, B.C. I was invited to donate a set of jewelry to the silent auction with proceeds going to support the David Suzuki Foundation.

I gladly accepted and set about designing a set of sustainable jewelry. The "Eternal Earth Collection" was inspired by the David Suzuki Foundation and the environmental advocates within it. The word eternal means everlasting, enduring, continuing and that is how I like to think of our planet – as a growing, living, and sustaining Earth. The only way the planet can be like this is because of people who take time to make a difference, heal the environment, and educate the public such as Dr. David Suzuki, an award-winning scientist, environmentalist, and broadcaster.

The “Eternal Earth Link Bracelet/Necklace Combo” features a detachable sterling silver bracelet that can be worn on it’s own, or as part of the necklace. The necklace can be likewise worn with or without the bracelet, making for a versatile design. A single silver recycled leaf adorns the bracelet. Recycled black roses hug the signature ecocessories clasp that closes the necklace. Recycled Swarovski crystals are an elegant accent to this nature inspired design.

The “Eternal Earth Oval Cuff” has been hand formed, hammered and shaped into this one-of-a-kind design. A simple black rose is wire wrapped to the sterling silver cuff along with a recycled Swarovski crystal.

Again in the “Eternal Earth Link Earrings” the same recycled beads are simple touches to the intertwined hammered and formed links that complete the earrings in this set. Sustainability, attention to detail and style are all considered in this eco-friendly set of jewelry that was hand crafted in North Vancouver, B.C. using only recycled beads and mostly non-toxic silversmithing processes.

Bid on this stunning set of sustainable, eco-friendly jewelry at "An Evening of Sustainable Food, Wine, & Fashion Design". RSVP on Facebook Here.

New Line Launching at Portobello West

I'm launching a new line of jewelry designs tomorrow at Portobello West! I'm still trying to decide on an official name, but I've taken a series of funky, chunky clip-on earrings and converted them into rad, reinvented necklace pendants. Earrings are set on texturized and hammered sterling silver discs for a modern vintage feel.

{vintage clip-on earrings recycled as sterling silver pendants being debuted at Portobello West}

I'm so proud of this line and think they will make fabulous Christmas gifts. The necklaces will be priced less than $100 and each piece is one-of-a-kind! Tell a story with the gifts you choose this holiday season.

If you are in Vancouver - don't forget! Portobello West is tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009 from 12-6pm at the Rocky Mountaineer Station.

$2 admission and FREE shuttle from the Main St. Skytrain Station!

Fall Leaves, Good Karma, and Romance

I'm working in my home-based studio today - but in a matter of weeks I'll be designing in a new studio space downtown Vancouver. As of Nov. 1st I'll be renting a jeweler's studio space in an old heritage building in Gastown, a historic and charming area of Vancouver right on the waterfront of the Burrard Inlet.

This is a big step for ecocessories and as I spend the last week designing in my home while preparing for Portobello West, I can't help but reflect on the path that's led here, my goals for the future, and on what is inspiring me right now. I realize that everything happens for a reason. Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith.

Portobello West
is this Sunday, October 25th. Make your gifts count this year by giving handmade, sustainable, and one-of-a-kind designs.

One Of A Kind Vancouver

On Thursday, I headed down to the Vancouver Convention Center to attend the One Of A Kind Show & Sale. I visited with some amazing vendors and scoped out some unique designers to support this holiday season. Of course I am always most interested in the eco-friendly goods, so I took a stroll down through the Green District, an aisle dedicated solely to eco-entrepreneurs!

First I met Jill, of All Things Jill, who produces a line of eco-friendly bath and body products. Jill got started when she brewed up a few things as gifts for friends & family. The products were such a hit that those recipients then wanted to give gifts to their friends & family too! All Things Jill was born. Jill boasts about how the concept of being green is embed in all aspects of her business - from the products themselves, to production, packaging, shelving and all other processes. In fact they produce less than a bag of garbage every 3 weeks! Visit Jill this holiday season to "Pamper Your Body. Protect The Earth."

If you have a little one to buy from this season, choose an eco-friendly beaver friend, or stylish upcycled wool hat, or how about an organic teether for your babe. Dress Me Up is owned by Tressa who boasts that each of her simple & adorable products are one-of-a-kind. Tressa screen prints beautiful, soothing patterns on long rolls of organic fabric, and then cuts them up for her toys, making each design unique. Give your youngster a safe, stylish, handmade toy this year from Dress Me Up.

Green vendors peppered the rest of the show too, and after I left the Green District I met the energetic Wendy of Dhalia Drive. The name comes from the street where she used to live, and she also draws inspiration from the Dhalia flower (she used her neighbour's blossoms to create dye for her slips). Wendy designs stunning robes and slips that are truly works of art. Gaudy fabrics are entirely reinvented as Wendy dyes, prints, and even sometimes uses rust to stain intricate patterns on her new creations. Wendy is an eco-avenger as she works hard "Resurrecting The Fashion Wasteland" and her designs are a must see at the One Of A Kind Show & Sale.

If you are in Vancouver this Thanksgiving weekend, definitely make time to visit the Vancouver Convention Centre where the show will be on until October 11th. More details on the website here.

Eco Wire Wrapped Pendants

Lately, I've been focusing my design efforts on some new pieces - pendants that I hope will appeal to many of my ecocessories following and that will flatter many different women and necklines. I came up with these two inch pendants inspired by the Earth.

{Budding Branch, Red Sizzle, and Purple Magnolia necklaces}

The pendants come on a simple sterling silver chain, that is completely adjustable up to a maximum of (S) 18", (M) 24", or (L) 30" depending on the length you choose at checkout. The chain is closed with a sterling silver C clasp to achieve an adjustable and secure design.

{Storm Cloud, Tree of Light, and layered pendant necklaces to depict S, M, & L chains}

I'd love to know what you think of the pendants! Comment below - it's especially great to get feedback on new designs, such as these. I brought them to my silversmithing class last night to get feedback from jewelry designers "in the know" and they were a hit.

Visit the online shop to pick up your favourite pendant and enjoy free ground shipping in Canada.

Fine Finds - A Yaletown Style Destination

I'm excited to announce that my sterling silver & recycled bead designs are now in 4 store locations in the Vancouver area! I'm going to introduce you to each store, one at a time. But first I'd like to also let you know that I'll be adding a second wave of Fall 2009 designs to the site on Thursday, October 8th at 9:00am EST. You know the date, and you know the time - be sure to check out the shop on Thursday. And now, introducing...

Fine Finds
is truly a Yaletown style destination - there are other stores in the area and you can spend a day checking them all out, but be sure to hit up this wonderful boutique on Mainland Street. It's a short walk from the Yaletown Canada Line stop and worth visiting first!

Upon entering you may not know where to start! Is it the attractive stand of hats, or the new Fall scarves and hats? The delicious vanilla soaps, or the bath & body products made by an assortment of Canadian companies? The playful accessories - from headbands, hair clips, bags, or diamond bottle stoppers for the perfect wedding gift?

Explore the racks of designer clothing and find some favourite Canadian labels including Soia & Kyo, Eve Gravel, Valerie Dumaine, Sweet Soul, or Lily & Jae. Score your favourite international designer brands too, like the versatile Metalicus line or Colleen Eitzen.

The best part though, in my humble opinion, is the dozen glass cabinets of locally handmade designer jewelry. ecocessories has joined many Vancouver favourites at this boutique known for it's high quality, locally made, sterling silver and gold fill jewelry.

Fall Business Women Online Expo - Booth #30

The Fall Business Women Expo is being generously hosted by Dee of Girl's Night Out. This event takes place completely online - if you find yourself with some time this weekend, start by visiting the Girl's Night Out blog. You'll find a listing of participating vendors and links to their blogs at 12:00am EST on Saturday, Sept. 26th, 2009.

On each blog the vendor will introduce themselves and tell you a bit about their business etc. Some will even be featuring contests, coupons, and free give-aways! Like ME! The point is to create holiday shopping lists, network, and have an enjoyable online shopping experience. Read on to be introduced to ecocessories, my sterling silver & recycled bead design business.

Who I Am

I'm an artist and my my medium is sterling silver and recycled beads. Home is currently on the West Coast of Canada and I try to live an eco-friendly and organic lifestyle, which I incorporate into my business and all that I do. I find inspiration everywhere! Nature, food, people, art, characters, fashion and style all influence my designs.

{Jessica Reiss, ecocessories designer}

I love creating jewelry that has a story and a low environmental impact and I try to pour my heart and energy into each piece I make. When naming my pieces I think of what in this world the colours/shapes/textures of the recycled beads remind me of and bring that image to focus in my mind. This image inspires how the design is assembled, and how it feels and wears.

What I Believe

That it is possible to produce high quality, eco-friendly, and ethically sound jewelry designs that are 100% handmade wearable works of art. ecocessories jewelry is:

High Quality - hand-wrapped loops close every joint, and I never use jump rings which can split or stretch.

Eco-Friendly - I use only recycled beads sourced from my Jewelry Recycling Service and non-toxic cleaning and silversmithing processes in my North Vancouver, B.C. studio.

{Antique Garden Love Necklace - find this design at the TWO OF HEARTS boutique}

Ethical - I support small, local businesses for my silver, tools, office supplies, graphic design, web development etc. I also incorporate fair trade materials into my designs when possible.

Handmade - All aspects of my designs are handmade - I hand form every silver component, hoop, etc. All my earring wires are handmade, and my signature, hand crafted clasps become part of the design.

One-Of-A-Kind - Every jewelry design is unique - never see another person wearing the same piece of jewelry as you!

What I Do

I design sterling silver and recycled bead jewelry for my retail locations, markets, and my online shop.

{Soldering some hand formed circles in my North Vancouver studio}

I also operate a jewelry recycling service and invite anyone (including you!) to recycle old, broken, or simply unwanted jewelry with ecocessories. I disassemble the jewelry and use the beads and vintage components for my new designs. YES I want anything! It is a jewelry recycling service only meant to relieve you of unwanted jewelry that is cluttering your life. I have colour coded and sorted drawers at my studio and use your recycled jewelry as inspiration for my new designs.

{Lining up some recycled beads for a bracelet design}

I love to connect with like-minded individuals about living green, eco-fashion, unique design, or fresh ideas. I am proud to say that I have almost 750 online supporters between my Twitter, Facebook, and E-Newsletter Subscribers and I would love for you to be 751!

{Black Tusk Puzzle Bracelet can be found at FINE FINDS boutique}

To say THANKS to my online supporters, I'm offering a FREE pair of earrings to anyone who comments on this blog post by Wednesday, September 30th. What do you think of my designs? my mission to recycle jewelry? living green? sustainable fashion? Comment below - you will be contacted by the e-mail address you provide, which will be kept strictly confidential.

Sustainably Yours,

Jessica Reiss

Glass Cabinet Creations

It's been an inspiring and exciting weekend at the ecocessories studio. I invested in a glass cabinet to display all my finished creations, and have never felt more inspired. It's much more rewarding having my designs displayed to urge on more designing instead of keeping each piece packaged away until it reaches it's new home.

The website will be a bit quiet this week I'm afraid, but there are some awesome designs to be had in the online store and amazing deals in the sale section. My newest designs are not going to be posted yet as I have an appointment with another Vancouver store this week who is interested in carrying my line, and they'll get the pick of the crop!

I did want to share with you these playful wire wrapped rings I've been making. These rings are so fun and are for sale at the Two Of Hearts boutique on Main St.

Modish Handmade Blog

If I have few minutes of down time, I always find it inspirational to peruse the online world to see what other artists, designers, and crafters are doing. I love how inspiring it is to see two artists, who work in the same medium, produce radically different and equally beautiful results.

One of my favourite places to head for this sort of inspiration is the Modish Handmade Blog. The blog is written by the fabulous Jena, whose mission is to bring awareness to emerging art and design talent. Artists, including myself, are so thankful for voices like Jena's as her daily efforts are what help us succeed.

If you have time yourself to be inspired, head over to the Modish Blog to oogle the finest the handmade world has to offer, complements of Jena's artistically refreshing taste. Thanks Jena!

Interview Inspiration: Chelsea Bell

Over the next while, I'm going to do a series of short interviews with some beautiful individuals who have been instrumental in my success with ecocessories. Read. Share. Enjoy.

Chelsea Bell and I found kindred spirits in each other after becoming neighbors in an inspiring blue house with a white fence in beautiful North Vancouver, B.C. As an early supporter of my jewelry designs, Chelsea has constantly encouraged me to pursue my passions, develop my entrepreneurial ideas, and follow my dreams. Chelsea co-developed the ecocessories website with her talented fiance, Justin, and has often acted as a business confidant to help me explore my ecocessories goals.

I admire her artistic endeavors, most recently with her newly launched Peripheral Kid website which explores Chelsea's insightful take on the arts and culture community. I'm also a strong advocate of the family run business - and trust their sustainable wool products for a safe, eco-friendly sleep night after night.

1. What do you do for a living?

I run, an online bedding company, and help other entrepreneurs with their blogs and business processes. I have recently started an arts and culture blog called in order to share my inspiration, and the work of those who inspire me.

{"The Peripheral Kid is an experiment in self exploration both through creation and appreciation of the arts."}

2. What is the best thing about it?

I have the opportunity to use my creativity and design skills to help others achieve their goals, and with SleepySheep, I enjoy helping people to understand the importance of a natural and healthy sleep environment.

3. The worst?

Work for others often eats up time that I would like to invest in my personal creative projects!

4. What inspires you?

I am inspired by the art, design, and creativity of others. Sometimes I find that reading a poem can inspire me visually, while looking at a painting can in turn inspire me to write a poem, a short story, or an essay.

5. What is your art?

My primary art is poetry; I also paint, sketch, craft, and write fiction and essays.

{"Wool creates air pockets that keep the temperature of the sheep consistent, no matter what the weather is doing. It also wicks away moisture and evaporates it out into the environment, while discouraging the growth of fungus, molds, and the allergy sufferer's nightmare: the common dust mite."}

6. How do you incorporate sustainability into your life?

I choose to support local artisans, eat organic and local, and make purchase decisions often based on where the products were made.

7. Your work?

With SleepySheep, we choose post consumer recycled materials for any printed materials, and also choose to support sustainable farming practices with the materials that we purchase.

8. Your fashion?

I am a thrift store junky; I always start my clothes shopping at the thrift stores, where I have found beautiful, unique, and handmade pieces to my wardrobe. I also by from local designers when I can afford to. Sometimes I use my old clothing to make new clothes for myself or my daughter.

9. Why does living sustainably matter to you?

Living as sustainably as we can is the only responsible choice as a mother and as a citizen of the Earth. Each decision that we make has consequences throughout our lives, that reach beyond us in ways that we cannot imagine. We must think of each other, and the well-being of eco-system, in order to find balanced an harmony.

10. What is your favourite quote?

"Let us tenderly and kindly cherish, therefore, the means of knowledge. Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write." - John Adams

11. What wisdom would you like to pass on to others?

Love is an action. If someone says they love you, those are words; this is not love. Love is a series of choices. Love can been seen in your choices. Choose love.
